The 30 Hour Famine
Posted on May 2nd, 2007 | Filed under What's happening?
Last week, on April 27-28, thousands of middle school and high school students participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. So far in 2007, over $6 million has been raised! If you’ve never heard of the 30 Hour Famine, it is a World Vision program that encourages youth to make a difference in the area of world hunger. More than 852 million people in the world are malnourished. This campaign not only raises money; it also raises awareness about this huge issue. Students agree to go without food for 30 hours and ask adults to sponsor them in this cause. Through the event, participants also find out what it means to experience hunger.
Last year, over 600,000 students in the US were a part of the 30 Hour Famine. Have you participated in this experience? What was it like?
How do you think God wants us to address the problem of world hunger?
At Awake this summer, we will talking about issues like world hunger, slavery, child trafficking, and poverty…and ways that each of us can help!

Hey,
My name is Keri. I am 14 years old, and I am already interested in joining 30 hour famine. Me and my youth grup is going to do the Challenge on May.18,2007! I have an eating disorder, but I am still willing to do this challenge for the children, even though it could kill me, I am going to do it for them! If you think a mineut, most people eat 3 meals a day, and children in far away places dont even have money or the food to eat 1 meal a day let alone a piece of food! I think it is very sad. Thats why I am working on raiseing alot of money to feed alot of starving children. Right now, every 3 seconds a poor child dies of hunger, and we are sitting here full from supper! Oh my. Just 1 dollar feeds a child for a day, so instead of buying a bag of chips or a coffie at Tim Hortins, give it to 30 hour famine to save the life of a child. God bless you all,
Keri

Keri, it’s great to hear about your awareness and concern for other people’s needs! Thanks for your challenge to us, we could all use a reminder to be a little less selfish and a little more generous! You’re right, even a small sacrafice on our part will make a great difference in other’s lives. That is good for me to remember
